Keep the RISD Clothes Closet in mind when you are cleaning out your kid's closet!

Established in 1986 by then-council president Sue Nivin, the Clothes Closet is a joint project of the RISD and the Council of PTAs.

The district provides space and utilities and the Council of PTAs (56 local units in RISD) provide the volunteers and the clothing.  According to the RISD Council of PTAs bylaws, the CC shall

1) maintain a used clothing establishment inventory for RISD students, working through local unit representatives, and 2) promote a volunteer program to assist in its operation.

The purpose of the Clothes Closet is to help RISD students in need by providing five days worth of gently worn, in-style, school appropriate clothing and toiletries for their use.  Each student is also given new socks, underwear, athletic shoes, hat and gloves.  

Students from Pre – K to high school are seen by appointment following a referral by their school counselors. All information regarding referrals is kept strictly confidential. Our appointment times are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 2:30 on school days.

This service depends entirely on the ability of this community to provide volunteers, clothing, shoes, and toiletries needed. 

RISD PTAs are encouraged to donate used items on a weekly basis along with periodic donations from various community clubs, companies, and private individuals.  Monetary contributions (made out to the RISD Council of PTAs) are used to purchase new underwear, shoes, and socks, and fill the gaps as needed for jeans, tops, jackets, and shoes.

Donations can be made by contacting the Clothes Closet representative from any RISD school or they can be dropped off at the Clothes Closet on Fridays from 9 to 10 am.
